Champaign-Urbana marching bands showcase their skills ahead of gameday

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Marching bands from across the area showed off their skills Monday evening for the third-annual Champaign-Urbana Marching Showcase.

Four different schools took part in the event, including Urbana, Central and Centennial High Schools, and even a special guest appearance from the Marching Illini.

Organizers said it’s an event for the community to come out and get a taste of the excitement before gameday.

“It’s great. And it shows like our community really supports the arts. It’s a nice, noncompetitive thing,” said Urbana Band Director Darren Hicks. “We all come out, we are all supporting each other and showcasing all the good things that are happening.”

Champaign Mayor Deborah Feinen also shaed her support for the event in a Facebook post.

“Sometimes the Mayor gets to do really fun things. Tonight welcoming our local bands (and U of I) was certainly one of them! Loved that the Alums from each school now in Marching Illini joined their schools!” Feinen wrote.

The event was free, but they accepted donations. Any money put forward will be divided for the bands to share and use for either travel, equipment or more.
