SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Brigham Young University still reigns supreme as Utah’s best college, according to a new annual report from U.S. News.
The report ranked the best colleges for 2025, revealing Princeton University, MIT, Harvard, Stanford, and Yale are still the nation’s best schools. As for Utah’s colleges, BYU still holds the top spot, rising from last year’s No. 115 ranking to No. 109.
The privately-owned Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints university ranked particularly high due to its affordability, particularly for students who are members of the Church. For non-Latter-day Saint members, full-time tuition for an undergraduate student in a year is estimated to cost about $10,000, which is subsidized to about $5,000 for members. This is compared to the $12,400 estimated full-time Utah resident undergraduate tuition fees for two semesters at the University of Utah.
That’s not to say the University of Utah is not a good choice. U.S. News ranked the Salt Lake City-based school as the second-best college in Utah, despite falling from No. 115 last year to No. 136 in this year’s rankings. U.S. News recognized the U of U as a top public school nationwide, particularly for its entrepreneurship program, which ranked at No. 8.
U.S. News also ranked Utah State University at No. 259 nationally, a 10-point jump from its 2024 listing, making it the third-highest-rated college in Utah. Utah’s Top 5 was rounded out by Westminster University, which ranked No. 12 for western regional universities, and Snow College, which ranked No. 33 for western regional colleges.
