last year, i tried to watch the disney film swiss family robinson. it was a film that i had heard of quite a bit but never actually saw. the closest i had ever gotten was the read along record book that my mom had in the 70s that she passed down to me. we have disney plus so i decided to finally give the movie a chance.
since i’ve been watching movies for most of my life and have seen some pretty fucked up movies such as a clockwork orange, salo, cannibal holocaust, and the texas chainsaw massacre, you’d think that i’ve reached a point where nothing can shock me. well, swiss family robinson proved me wrong.
i was extremely shocked by the excessive levels of animal cruelty depicted in it. as you can probably guess, i’m one of those movie fans who hates seeing animals die or get hurt in movies. as a result, swiss family robinson is a super hard watch for someone like me. animals are put into dangerous situations like it’s no big deal in this fucking movie. when the youngest boy tied a rope around an elephant’s foot, that was pretty much the final nail in the coffin for me. and thus, swiss family robinson earned the extremely rare honor of being one of the few movies that i turned off before finishing.
i wish i could say that it’s just a movie and this was all fake. but nope. according to IMDB, quite a few of the animal practices in this movie are no longer allowed on movie sets. one such incident including SHOCKING A ZEBRA WITH ELECTRICITY! i mean, i know the 1960s was a simpler time and i really shouldn’t be judging 1960s behavior with modern sensibilites. but on the other hand, JESUS CHRIST!
