Doylestown Art & Artist Series To Explore "Truth Through Fiction"

DOYLESTOWN, PA — The Doylestown Historical Society and “Neshaminy: The Bucks County Historical and Literary Journal” are teaming up to present the next lecture in its Abramson Art & Artist series: “Truth Through Fiction: How Historical Fiction Excavates the Past to Understand the Present.”

From Hillary Mantel to Colson Whitehead to Margaret Atwood, writers have been using recent and distant history to create compelling stories. But why are we so drawn to fictionalized tales of the past?

The public is invited to attend the May 30 discussion, which will feature three Bucks County historical fiction writers – LC W. Allingham, Natalie Zellat Dyen, and Melissa D. Sullivan, led by Neshaminy Journal managing editor William J. Donahue.

Don Swaim, Neshaminy’s executive editor, founder of the Bucks County Writers Workshop and the author of many books of historical fiction, will also offer brief remarks on the history of Neshaminy Journal.

Prior to the panel, the public is invited to mingle with the staff of Neshaminy at DHS’s latest exhibit, “Neshaminy: The Last Five Years.” Drink and light refreshments will be served.

The event is free and open to the public at the Doylestown Historical Society, 56 S. Main Street Doylestown 18901 on Thursday, May 30. The exhibit will be open 6 to 6:45 p.m. with the discussion in the Barn from 7 to 8 p.m. A Q&A and meet-and-greet with the writers will follow.

The Abramson Art & Artist Series is a lecture series named in honor of the first publisher of Neshaminy and former President of the Doylestown Historical Society, Stuart Abramson. Neshaminy: The Bucks County Historical and Literary Journal is a co-publication of the Doylestown Historical Society and the Bucks County Writers Workshop.
